Nothing will grow for 75 years.

75年間は草木も生えない。

"Nothing will grow for 75 years." Fifty-nine years have passed since the August sixth when Hiroshima was so thoroughly obliterated that many succumbed to such doom.

To that end, the city of Hiroshima, along with the Mayors for Peace and our 611 member cities in 109 countries and regions, hereby declares the period beginning today and lasting until August 9, 2005, to be a Year of Remembrance and Action for a Nuclear-Free World. Our goal is to bring forth a beautiful "flower" for the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombings, namely, the total elimination of all nuclear weapons from the face of the Earth by the year 2020. Only then will we have truly resurrected hope for life on this "nothing will grow" planet.

　「75年間は草木も生えぬ」と言われたほど破壊し尽された8月6日から59年。
　　（中略）
　そのために広島市は、世界109か国・地域、611都市からなる平和市長会議と共に、今日から来年の8月9日までを「核兵器のない世界を創（つく）るための記憶と行動の一年」にすることを宣言します。私たちの目的は、被爆後75年目に当る2020年までに、この地球から全（すべ）ての核兵器をなくすという「花」を咲かせることにあります。そのときこそ「草木も生えない」地球に、希望の生命が復活します。

2004年広島平和宣言の一部です。世界最初の原爆被災地である広島市は、永遠の平和を確立しようという広島市民の願いを全世界の人々に伝えるために、昭和22年（1947年）から毎年8月6日に平和祭をおこなっています。その平和祭では市民の代表として広島市長が世界に向けて平和宣言を読み上げます。今年の平和宣言では、人類がテロや核兵器への依存を断ち切るためにどのように行動しなければならないのか、そのことに広島市はどのように関わっていくか、が明確に語られています。59年前の夏、町をおそった「草木も生えない」惨禍の記憶は、このようにヒロシマを突き動かす原点になっているのです。
